Study: Zofran Does Not Improve Cognitive Abilities in Alzheimer's Patients

Results of a new study suggest the anti-nausea drug ondansetron (Zofran) does not result in significant improvement in cognitive abilities for Alzheimer's patients.

The drug primarily is used to treat and prevent severe vomiting in chemotherapy patients, as well as overdose victims, and may help symptoms of schizophrenia.

In a multi-center, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, researchers, reporting in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, found that patients treated with the drug "failed to demonstrate any significant cognitive improvement."
